Our bodies do not make Vitamin C so we need to consume this vital vitamin through our diet daily.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and helps lessen oxidative stress to the body and is even thought to lower cancer risks. It is a water soluble vitamin considered to be essential for healthy skin. When applied topically via moisturizers, serums and lotions, Vitamin C can penetrate deep into damaged skin. It is a safe and excellent ingredient in skincare products.
Here are TEN good reasons why we should be including Vitamin C in our daily diet and why we should be looking for this powerhouse ingredient in our skincare products.
VITAMIN C is ESSENTIAL for a HEALTHY BODY
- It assists the growth and repair of tissues throughout our body
- It helps the body produce collagen – an important protein to make skin, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels and tendons
- It is needed for healing wounds, repairing bones and maintaining healthy teeth
VITAMIN C is ESSENTIAL for GLOWING SKIN
- It enhances the skin’s repair process
- It strengthens the skin’s barrier response
- It reduces inflammation and irritation
- It increases the production of dermal collagen – which is significant for wrinkle reduction
- It inhibits the enzyme, tyrosinase which is the regulator of melanin pigment production
- It is essential for the formation of collagen to ensure a firm skin
- It provides potent antioxidant protection against damaging free radicals caused by our environment – pollution, sun and oxygen
SO, WHERE DO WE GET IT?
Foods high in Vitamin C include berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries), dark leafy greens (such as kale and spinach), broccoli, kiwifruit, citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, clementines, mandarins and grapefruit), tomatoes, capsicums, chili peppers, papaya, pineapple and guava.
During these cooler months juices are a great way to get a good shot of Vitamin C. Freshly squeezed orange juice or grapefruit juice is a great way to start the day. Alternatively, a fresh tomato juice is a winner or a hot lemon juice (with added ginger and honey for taste) can give you a boost of Vitamin C any time of day.
Add red or green capsicums (or even both) and chili peppers (which have a high source of Vitamin C) to your stir fries mixed in with some yummy kale, spinach and broccoli and you’ll have a meal that will please the whole family.
Apart from being found in these colourful foods, Vitamin C is available in powder form (Ascorbic Acid) and can be dissolved in water for a quick fix. And for a sweet, chewy option, Vitamin C tablets are available too.
When it comes to Vitamin C in skincare you are likely to see it more and more on products listed as having anti-ageing benefits. Because in actual fact, from a scientific standpoint, Vitamin C does help to fight against wrinkles and does actually rejuvenate the skin. It really is a stand-out ingredient, which is why we love it!!
There is a problem though! And that is not all products on the market contain a stable form of Vitamin C and are not well formulated, deeming these products ineffective and in actual fact, a waste of money.
Vitamin C comes in various forms and when it comes to benefits for the skin Ascorbic Acid (also known as L-ascorbic Acid) has been researched the most. When properly formulated and especially when mixed with other potent antioxidants and active ingredients, it really can become an amazing superfood for the skin. Daily use of this superfood can support the skin nutritionally helping to create younger, firmer skin while helping to lighten dark spots caused from sun damage and even assist with acne marks.
Other forms of Vitamin C that research has demonstrated to be stable and effective are:
- Sodium Ascorbyl phosphate
- Magnesium ascorbal phosphate
- Retinyl ascorbate
- Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate
- Ascorbyl palmitate
Vitamin C, like other antioxidants, is vulnerable to destabilisation with exposure to air and light. What this means is that the efficacy of the antioxidants is largely compromised. For this reason, look for products that are packaged in dark or opaque containers which protect the contents from light. And choose airless pump containers which will maintain the integrity of the ingredients unlike jars which when opened will expose the ingredients to the air and possible contamination.
